Jailbreak for the iPhone 5 “I’m so confused”

Can you jailbreak the iPhone 5? Can you not? Why when I plug in my iPhone 5 with red snow it does not work yet I hear others talking about jail breaking their iPhone 5….

These are things I tend to hear from time to time with frustrated iPhone users who want to jail break their iPhone 5. So am here to sum it all up for you.

This information is as of 8/3/2013 – I might update later as things change, but I might get lazy too so let’s see.

I’m going to try and cover a wide spectrum here ranging from someone who has no idea what the difference is between unlocking and jamil breaking to the experienced user who can run a Linux shell on their iPhone <—Me

Ok back to the topic at hand

Difference between Unlock and Jail Break

Unlock – is basically unlocking your phone so that you can use it with other carriers. So you have an iPhone with att but now you want to use it with T-Mobile. You will need to “Unlock” the phone to do this. Not really that popular anymore since almost all carriers have iPhone’s.

Jail Break – Jail breaking your phone is basically hacking your phone. This allows you do download apps from Cydia which is basically a app store of the underground market of the iPhone. Basically people create apps that you cant normally get in the app store that can do some cool stuff. For instance there are apps that let you have more icons on your desktop. Add more icons to you dock and the very cool app MiWi which allows you to broadcast free wifi from your phone for Free. Normally you have to pay for this service through your carrier if you are the unlucky lad who does not jail break your phone. This is the preferred method and choice of many including myself.

What versions of the iPhone can be jail broken?

As of today 6.1.2 with the iPhone 5 and below can be jail broken. Anything higher cannot.

How do you check? Simple go to Settings > About > Version and look there. If you are at 6.1.2 or lower you can jail break. Anything higher and you cant

As you can see, I cannot jail break mine yet…but soon mmuhhhaaaaaaa

Note – If you want to eventually jail break your phone, stop updating the IOS. If you keep updating it, then you will wait longer. Your settings icon on your phone will eventually have a notification symbol on it that looks like this

Once your version can be jail broken then you are going to want to run these steps to do this. Its not that hard and really easy to do. There are several program that can do this, but for the sake of this article I am going to show you how to use redsn0w to do this which is a popular app.
