How To Move Files From One Folder To Another – Windows

Ever feel like a tard because you don’t know how to move a file from one place to another? You could make it easy and get a usb thing that will transfer your files for you.
Even though this is one of the basic skills with using a windows computer you would be surprised how many people do not posses this skill. In fact In my network I come across users who are younger than me who can do this.

I say to myself sometime “How in the world do you not know how to do this already?”

What I have learned is that even I assume that users already posses this skill, many have not. I think it’s one of those things that every SYS Admin assumes everyone knows, but in fact they are never taught.

So let me teach you.

Now I could show you about 20 different ways to copy a file, but I will leave that for a later post. I might call it something like “How to move files from one folder to another -The Complex Edition”.

For simplicity sake I am going to show you the quickest and easiest way to do this.

First I think it’s important that you understand the structure of the file system so it will make more sense to you. Trust me, once you understand the structure everything will make more sense.

Everything starts at the C: Drive. If you want to know why its called the C: Drive take a look here.

Think of the C Drive as a “C”abinet or Cabinet. Much like a file cabinet.

In your Cabinet you have folders, just like in windows. In fact they look the same

In that folder you may or may not have other folders…and so on. Think of it that way and things might make a little more sense.

How to move a file from one place to another

The easiest way is to right click on a file or folder. You have two options when you do “Cut” and “Copy”

• Cut – Means to move from one place to another. So basically it will be moved from its original location to it’s new location
• Copy – Just what it means, it will be copied to another location

Then all you want to do it navigate to your destination and right click again. Once you do the only option you want to “Paste”

That is going to put the file in that location.
